Neomycin is an antibiotic that belongs to a classification of drugs known as aminoglycosides. Veterinarians prescribe it to treat and prevent a wide range of bacterial infections, predominantly those found in the intestines.

Neomycin suppresses protein synthesis and growth of bacteria, which enables it to kill bacteria cells in rapid fashion. It is most effective against intestinal bacterial infections because it is not absorbed when taken orally. This causes the medication to have a localized effect. Similarly, the topical formulation of Neomycin doesn't get absorbed, which makes it ideal for treating localized skin-infections caused by bacteria.

Neomycin is not effective against systemic bacterial infections like pneumonia or infections of the bloodstream or bones.

Neomycin is usually well-tolerated by most animals, but side-effects are still a risk. Depending on the animal's sensitivity, diarrhea can be experienced when taking Neomycin orally or redness, irritation and itching at the site when applied topically. If you notice this type of skin reaction, stop the medication and contact the veterinarian to discuss other treatment options.

There are currently no known drug interactions with neomycin.

Neomycin should not be used if your pet is allergic to the drug. This drug also can interact with other medications, such as other antibiotics, Vitamin K, and digoxin. To reduce this risk, discuss your pet's drug regimen with your veterinarian before starting Neomycin. If your pet will be taking Neomycin for a prolonged period of time, it is important to test the function of the kidneys regularly.

Since Neomycin is being used to treat an infection, it is critical to finish the full course of therapy as directed by the veterinarian or the risk of a relapse will be increased. In many cases, your pet will start looking and feeling better early in the treatment, but regardless of this fact, continue to administer the Neomycin unless otherwise directed.
